Some bottles live up to the hype. Russell's Reserve 13 doesn't just live up to it, it reminds me why Wild Turkey remains one of my favorite distilleries.

The Nose
This one smells like heaven. Aromas of Cherry Coke Zero immediately grabbed my attention. Behind that are layers of rich oak, a hint of raspberries, and light brown sugar that add just enough sweetness without overpowering the oak. It truly smells amazing.
The Palate
This tastes truly phenomenal. It's beautifully balanced while still letting the oak take center stage. Rich cherry pie filling wrapped in a buttery crust comes through first, followed by cinnamon and just a touch of brown sugar. As it develops, warm vanilla and toasted oak build alongside light milk chocolate.
One of my favorite things about this pour is the mouthfeel. There's a subtle tingly effervescence across the middle and back of the palate that keeps every sip lively and interesting.
The Finish
The finish is excellent. Light cherry and oak linger long after the sip, leaving you ready to go back for another.
Overall
Russell's Reserve 13 continues to show why it's one of the most sought-after annual bourbon releases. It's incredibly balanced. Mature without becoming over-oaked or bitter, sweet without being dessert-like, and layered enough that I keep finding something new in each pour.
Yes, the MSRP is $200, and we paid $250. Given how difficult this bottle is to find, I'd gladly pay that again. The fact that we actually found this sitting on a store shelf for only $50 over retail blew our minds. The Colorado whiskey market has been wild lately, and it's been exciting to see more allocated bottles actually making it onto store shelves.
Would I buy it at retail?
Absolutely.
Does the quality match the price?
Yes. Even at the $250 we paid, I felt like I got my money's worth.
Would I recommend it to a friend?
Without hesitation, especially if they enjoy well-aged Wild Turkey.
Would I recommend it to someone new to whiskey?
Probably not. While this is a truly incredible pour, the proof and oak-forward profile might be intimidating to someone who's just getting into whiskey.
Who will enjoy this most?
Fans of mature, oak-forward bourbons who appreciate rich cherry notes and beautifully balanced whiskey.
Would I spend time hunting for it?
Absolutely. It's worth putting in the effort to find.
Would I buy a backup bottle?
If I found another around the price we paid, I absolutely would.
Would I order a pour at a bar?
If I couldn't find a bottle on the shelf, I'd gladly order a pour at the right price.
How often would I realistically reach for it?
Not every night. This is a bottle I'd save for nights when I wanted to slow down and really enjoy a great pour.
Does it stand out from similar whiskeys?
Absolutely. The balance of mature oak, cherry, sweetness, and spice makes this a bourbon I'll remember for a long time. As for how it compares to previous releases, I'm not sure yet. I'd love to put it head-to-head with the 2025 Russell's Reserve 15.
Will I remember it after the glass is empty?
Absolutely. This is one of those pours that sticks with you long after you've finished the last sip.
